Our Biblical Heritage in Heraldry & Signs

Overview

Since the time of Noah our Father in Heaven has given us signs and symbols to remember the promises he gave us.  These signs and symbols were inherited and passed down through the generations.  The Israelites received their symbols based on the meaning of their name and the blessings they received from their father Jacob Israel and the blessing they received from Moses.  The Israelites had banners with their symbols on them that represented their tribe. These banners later became own as [bible] heraldry symbols that are inherited and passed down through the generations.   After the Exodus from Egypt, our Father in Heaven instructed the Israelites to camp in a specific order with their banners that are also known as standards.

Let the children of Israel encamp fronting each other, every man keeping his own rank, according to their standards [banner], according to the houses of their families; the children of Israel shall encamp round about the tabernacle of witness.” Sep Num 2:2

The picture below represents each tribe’s position and banner at this camp described in Numbers chapter 2.  The inner ring is the Number camp and the outer ring is the New Jerusalem City Gates to the Kingdom that was described in Ezekiel.  For more information about this arrangement and how it represents the Zodiac which is also called the Mazzaroth, see this page.

Just prior to the Israelites receiving their Promised Land, our Father in Heaven warned them that if they did not follow the laws of Moses they would be removed from the land and scattered among the nations.  The descendants of Israel did not obey and were scatted upon the earth.  When they were scattered they brought their symbols with them and continued to use these symbols and developed new symbols represent new family lines.

If thou wilt not hearken to do all the words of this law, which have been written in this book, to fear this glorious and wonderful name, the Lord thy God; then the Lord shall magnify thy plagues, and the plagues of thy seed, great and wonderful plagues, and evil and abiding diseases. And he shall bring upon thee all the evil pain of Egypt, of which thou wast afraid, and they shall cleave to thee. And the Lord shall bring upon thee every sickness, and every plague that is not written, and every one that is written in the book of this law, until he shall have destroyed thee. And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of the sky in multitude; because thou didst not hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God. And it shall come to pass that as the Lord rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you, so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you; and ye shall be quickly removed from the land, into which ye go to inherit it. And the Lord thy God shall scatter thee among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other; and thou shalt there serve other gods, wood and stone, which thou hast not known, nor thy fathers.” Sep Deu 28:58-64

As promised, due to our disobedience we have been receiving the curses in Deuteronomy chapter 28.

Children of Jacob Israel’s Symbols in Heraldry

Today we can use these symbols to track the Israelites migration to their new homeland; however, we must also use other historical information to track their movement also.  On this page I’m only identifying places where the each tribe’s symbol is being used; however in many situations the symbols are now being used by a different group of people that are not Israelites.  I have used the Septuagint to determine their symbols also known as bible heraldry. This table is a summary that is in birth order and more information is provided below.

Our Father in Heaven Blesses Noah

Our Father in Heaven made a covenant with Noah on the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) where he promised that the seasons and time will not be changed. Noah’s name means ‘rest’.

Our Father in Heaven Blesses Abraham & Sarah

Abraham was promised on the Feast of Weeks that he would become a father of many nations and many of his descendants would be kings.  The sign of this covenant his covenant the circumcision of his male descendants.  Abraham’s descendants would all be blessed.  The name Abraham means ‘exalted father of a multitude’.

“And I will make my covenant between me and thee: and I will multiply thee exceedingly. Abram tell flat on his face. And God said to him: I AM, and my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father. of many nations. Neither shall thy name be called any more Abram: but thou shalt be called Abraham: because I have made thee a father of many nations. And I will make thee increase, exceedingly, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and between thy sad after thee in their generations, by a perpetual covenant: to be a God to thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give to thee, and to thy seed, the land of thy sojournment, all the land of Chanaan for a perpetual possession, and I will be their God. Again God said to Abraham: And thou therefore shalt keep my covenant, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant which you shall observe, between me and you, and thy seed after thee: All the male kind of you shall be circumcised: And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, that it may be for a h sign of the covenant between me and you. An infant of eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations: he that is born in the house, as well as the bought servant shall be circumcised, and whosoever is not of your stock: And my covenant shall be in your flesh for a perpetual covenant. The male, whose dash of his foreskin shall not be circumcised, that soul shall be destroyed out of his people: because he hath broken my covenant.”  DR Gen 17:2-14

Our Father in Heaven also blessed Sarah stating she would be a mother of nations and she will have descendants who are kings.  Sarah means ‘lady, princes, queen’ ; therefore Sarah became a queen.

And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and moreover I will give thee a son of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be of her.” DR Gen 17:15-16

Paul confirms that the seed of Abraham has not been cast away in his letter to the Romans, the Latin speaking people.  He confirms that the Romans of that day are Israelites.

“I say then: Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God hath not cast away his people, which he foreknew.” DR Rom 11:1-2

The House of Israel’s Bible Heraldry & Inheritance

The house of Israel consisted of Jacob Israel’s 12 sons.   In birth order the sons are as follows:

These are the names of the sons of Israel; Ruben, Symeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar, Zabulon, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Nephthali, Gad, Aser.” Septuagint 1 Ch 2:1-2

Isaac Blesses Jacob and Esau

Jacob Israel received the birth right, the blessing and the royal scepter linage.  Jacob means ‘heal catcher’ and Israel means ‘God strives’.

Jacob Israel & Rachel

Isaac’s Blessing to Esau – Esau means ‘rough

And Esau said to his father, Hast thou only one blessing, father? Bless, I pray thee, me also, father. And Isaac being troubled, Esau cried aloud and wept. And Isaac his father answered and said to him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above. And thou shalt live by thy sword, and shalt serve thy brother; and there shall be a time when thou shalt break and loosen his yoke from off thy neck. And Esau was angry with Jacob because of the blessing, with which his father blessed him; and Esau said in his mind, Let the days of my father's mourning draw nigh, that I may slay my brother Jacob. And the words of Esau her elder son were reported to Rebecca, and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, Behold, Esau thy brother threatens thee to kill thee. Now then, my son, hear my voice, and rise and depart quickly into Mesopotamia to Laban my brother into Charran.”  Sep Gen 27:38-43

Our Father in Heaven’s Blessing to Jacob Israel

Jacob received the covenant from our Father in Heaven on the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost).  Jacob  was promised and blessed that his seed would be a gathering of nations and royal linage.

For more information about Jacob’s pillar and the coronation stone, see this page.

The Two Olive Branches

The house of Israel is represented by two olive branches in scripture.  The house of Israel became 13 tribes when Joseph received the double portion blessing inherent (Deu 21:15).   Ruben, Simeon, and Levi were disqualified from receiving the double portion due to behavior issues. Judah received the royal scepter linage and Joseph received the double blessing of the first born.

During different times of history the tribes were associated with either Ephraim or Judah; therefore I did not assign them to a specific house because of this.  Manassah was divided since half the tribe wanted land near Ruben and Gad that was east of the Jordan.  The other half received land next to their brethren Ephraim on the west side of the Jordan.

And we inherited that land at that time from Aroer, which is by the border of the torrent Arnon, and half the mount of Galaad; and I gave his cities to Ruben and to Gad. And the rest of Galaad, and all Basan the kingdom of Og I gave to the half-tribe of Manasse, and all the country round about Argob, all that Basan; it shall be accounted the land of Raphain. Sep Deu 3:12-13

And now divide this land by lot to the nine tribes, and to the half tribe of Manasse. From Jordan to the great sea westward thou shalt give it them: the great sea shall be the boundary. But to the two tribes and to the half tribe of Manasse, to Ruben and to Gad Moses gave an inheritance beyond Jordan: Moses the servant of the Lord gave it to them eastward, from Aroer, which is on the bank of the brook of Arnon, and the city in the midst of the valley, and all Misor from Maedaban.” Sep Jos 13:7-9

Our Father in Heaven promised to make the House of Juda and the House of Israel one nation and bring them back to their own land.  America is where this verse is being fulfilled.

And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: And thou son of man, take thee a stick: and write upon it: Of Juda, and of the children of Israel his associates: and take another stick and write upon it: For Joseph the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel, and of his associates. And join them one to the other into one stick, and they shall become one in thy hand. And when the children of thy people shall speak to thee, saying: Wilt thou not tell us what thou meanest by this? Say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel that are associated with him, and I will put them together with the stick of Juda, and will make them one stick: and they shall be one in his hand. And the sticks whereon thou hast written, shall be in thy hand, before their eyes. And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will take the children of Israel from the midst of the nations whither they are gone: and I will gather them on every side, and will bring them to their own land.” Eze 37:15-22

More verses about the olive branches:

For if the firstfruit be holy, so is the lump also: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches be broken, and thou, being a wild olive, art ingrafted in them, and art made partaker of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree, Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then: The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear. For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps he also spare not thee.”  Rom 11:16-21
For it shall be thus in the midst of the earth, in the midst of the people, as if a few olives, that remain, should be shaken out of the olive tree: or grapes, when the vintage is ended.” Isa 24:13

And I answered, and said to him: What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick, and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said to him: What are the two olive branches, that are by the two golden beaks, in which are the funnels of gold? And he spoke to me, saying: Knowest thou not what these are? And I said: No, my lord. And he said: These are two sons of oil who stand before the Lord of the whole earth.” Zec 4:11-14

These are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks, standing before the Lord of the earth. And if any man desireth to hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies; and if any man shall desire to hurt them, in this manner must he be killed.” ASV Rev 11:4-5

Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh

Reflected below is Jacob Israel’s blessing given to Ephraim and Manasseh:

“And it came to pass after these things, that it was reported to Joseph, Behold, thy father is ill; and, having taken his two sons, Manasse and Ephraim, he came to Jacob. And it was reported to Jacob, saying, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh to thee; and Israel having strengthened himself, sat upon the bed. And Jacob said to Joseph, My God appeared to me in Luza, in the land of Chanaan, and blessed me, and said to me, Behold, I will increase thee, and multiply thee, and will make of thee multitudes of nations; and I will give this land to thee, and to thy seed after thee, for an everlasting possession. Now then thy two sons, who were born to thee in the land of Egypt, before I came to thee into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasse, as Ruben and Symeon they shall be mine.  And the children which thou shalt beget hereafter, shall be in the name of their brethren; they shall be named after their inheritances. And as for me, when I came out of Mesopotamia of Syria, Rachel, thy mother, died in the land of Chanaan, as I drew night to the horse-course of Chabratha of the land of Chanaan, so as to come to Ephratha; and I buried her in the road of the course; this is Bethlehem. And when Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he said, Who are these to thee? And Joseph said to his father, They are my sons, whom God gave me here; and Jacob said, Bring me them, that I may bless them. Now the eyes of Israel were dim through age, and he could not see; and he brought them near to him, and he kissed them, and embraced them. And Israel said to Joseph, Behold, I have not been deprived of seeing thy face, and lo! God has showed me thy seed also. And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and they did reverence to him, with their face to the ground. And Joseph took his two sons, both Ephraim in his right hand, but on the left of Israel, and Manasse on his left hand, but on the right of Israel, and brought them near to him.  But Israel having stretched out his right hand, laid it on the head of Ephraim, and he was the younger; and his left hand on the head of Manasse, guiding his hands crosswise. And he blessed them and said, The God in whose sight my fathers were well pleasing, even Abraam and Isaac, the God who continues to feed me from my youth until this day; the angel who delivers me from all evils, bless these boys, and my name shall be called upon them, and the name of my fathers, Abraam and Isaac; and let them be increased to a great multitude on the earth. And Joseph having seen that his father put his right hand on the head of Ephraim--it seemed grievous to him; and Joseph took hold of the hand of his father, to remove it from the head of Ephraim to the head of Manasse. And Joseph said to his father, Not so, father; for this is the first-born; lay thy right-hand upon his head. And he would not, but said, I know it, son, I know it; he also shall be a people, and he shall be exalted, but his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. And he blessed them in that day, saying, In you shall Israel be blessed, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and Manasse; and he set Ephraim before Manasse. And Israel said to Joseph, Behold, I die; and God shall be with you, and restore you to the land of your fathers. And I give to thee Sicima, a select portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorites with my sword and bow.” Sep Gen 48

Clothing with Decorative Hems

The children of Israel wore decorative hems as instructed by the laws of Moses in Numbers 15:38. It was a symbol to reflect who they were and to indicate they followed the laws of Moses.

Jacob-Israel’s Blessing to the 12 Tribes

Below is the full blessings given to the Jacob Israel’s sons that were to be accomplished in the last days:

And Jacob called his sons, and said to them, Assemble yourselves, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in the last days. Gather yourselves together, and hear me, sons of Jacob; hear Israel, hear your father.

Ruben, thou art my first-born, thou my strength, and the first of my children, hard to be endured, hard and self-willed. Thou wast insolent like water, burst not forth with violence, for thou wentest up to the bed of thy father; then thou defiledst the couch, whereupon thou wentest up.

Symeon and Levi, brethren, accomplished the injustice of their cutting off [sword].  Let not my soul come into their counsel, and let not mine inward parts contend in their conspiracy, for in their wrath they slew men, and in their passion they houghed a bull. Cursed be their wrath, for it was willful, and their anger, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

Juda, thy brethren have praised thee, and thy hands shall be on the back of thine enemies; thy father's sons shall do thee reverence. Juda is a lion's whelp [young offspring]: from the tender plant, my son, thou art gone up, having couched thou liest as a lion, and as a whelp; who shall stir him up? A ruler shall not fail from Juda, nor a prince from his loins, until there come the things stored up for him; and he is the expectation of nations. Binding his foal to the vine, and the foal of his ass to the branch of it, he shall wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of the grape. His eyes shall be more cheering than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.

Zabulon shall dwell on the coast, and he shall be by a haven of ships, and shall extend to Sidon.
Issachar has desired that which is good; resting between the inheritances.  And having seen the resting place that it was good, and the land that it was fertile, he subjected his shoulder to labour, and became a husbandman [farmer].

Dan shall judge his people, as one tribe too in Israel. And let Dan be a serpent in the way, besetting the path, biting the heel of the horse (and the rider shall fall backward), waiting for the salvation of the Lord.

Gad, a plundering troop shall plunder him; but he shall plunder him, pursuing him closely.

Aser, his bread shall be fat; and he shall yield dainties to princes.

Nephthalim is a spreading stem, bestowing beauty on its fruit.

Joseph is a son increased; my dearly loved son is increased; my youngest son, turn to me. Against whom men taking evil counsel reproached him, and the archers pressed hard upon him. But their bow and arrows were mightily consumed, and the sinews of their arms were slackened by the hand of the mighty one of Jacob; thence is he that strengthened Israel from the God of thy father; and my God helped thee, and he blessed thee with the blessing of heaven from above, and the blessing of the earth possessing all things, because of the blessing of the breasts and of the womb, the blessings of thy father and thy mother--it has prevailed above the blessing of the lasting mountains, and beyond the blessings of the everlasting hills; they shall be upon the head of Joseph, and upon the head of the brothers of whom he took the lead.

Benjamin, as a ravening wolf, shall eat still in the morning, and at evening he gives food.
All these are the twelve sons of Jacob; and their father spoke these words to them, and he blessed them; he blessed each of them according to his blessing. And he said to them, I am added to my people; ye shall bury me with my fathers in the cave, which is in the field of Ephron the Chettite, in the double cave which is opposite Mambre, in the land of Chanaan, the cave which Abraam bought of Ephron the Chettite, for a possession of a sepulchre.  There they buried Abraam and Sarrha his wife; there they buried Isaac, and Rebecca his wife; there they buried Lea; in the portion of the field, and of the cave that was in it, purchased of the sons of Chet. And Jacob ceased giving charges to his sons; and having lifted up his feet on the bed, he died, and was gathered to his people.” Sep Gen 49:1-33

Moses’ Blessing to the Children of Israel

Below is the blessings that Moses give to the children of Israel that were to be an inheritance.

“And this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. And he said, The Lord is come from Sina, and has appeared from Seir to us, and has hasted out of the mount of Pharan, with the ten thousands of Cades; on his right hand were his angels with him. And he spared his people, and all his sanctified ones are under thy hands; and they are under thee; and he received of his words the law which Moses charged us, an inheritance to the assemblies of Jacob. And he shall be prince with the beloved one, when the princes of the people are gathered together with the tribes of Israel.

Let Ruben live [Lily, Fleur-de-lis sign of new life], and not die; and let him be many in number.
And this is the blessing of Juda; Hear, Lord, the voice of Juda, and do thou visit his people: his hands shall contend for him, and thou shalt be a help from his enemies.

And to Levi he said, Give to Levi his manifestations, and his truth to the holy man, whom they tempted in the temptation; they reviled him at the water of strife. Who says to his father and mother, I have not seen thee; and he knew not his brethren, and he refused to know his sons: he kept thine oracles, and observed thy covenant. They shall declare thine ordinances to Jacob, and thy law to Israel: they shall place incense in the time of thy wrath continually upon thine altar. Bless, Lord, his strength, and accept the works of his hands; break the loins of his enemies that have risen up against him, and let not them that hate him rise up.

And to Benjamin he said, The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in confidence, and God overshadows him always, and he rested between his shoulders.

And to Joseph he said, His land is of the blessing of the Lord, of the seasons of sky and dew, and of the deeps of wells below, and of the fruits of the changes of the sun in season, and of the produce of the months, from the top of the ancient mountains, and from the top of the everlasting hills, and of the fullness of the land in season: and let the things pleasing to him that dwelt in the bush come on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of him who was glorified above his brethren. His beauty is as the firstling of his bull, his horns are the horns of a unicorn; with them he shall thrust the nations at once, even from the end of the earth: these are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and these are the thousands of Manasse.

And to Zabulon he said, Rejoice, Zabulon, in thy going out, and Issachar in his tents. They shall utterly destroy the nations, and ye shall call men there, and there offer the sacrifice of righteousness; for the wealth of the sea shall suckle thee, and so shall the marts of them that dwell by the sea-coast.

And to Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlarges Gad: as a lion he rested, having broken the arm and the ruler. And he saw his first-fruits, that there the land of the princes gathered with the chiefs of the people was divided; the Lord wrought righteousness, and his judgment with Israel.

And to Dan he said, Dan is a lion's whelp, and shall leap out of Basan.

And to Nephthali he said, Nephthali has the fulness of good things; and let him be filled with blessing from the Lord: he shall inherit the west and the south.

And to Aser he said, Aser is blessed with children; and he shall be acceptable to his brethren: he shall dip his foot in oil. His sandal shall be iron and brass; as thy days, so shall be thy strength.

There is not any such as the God of the beloved; he who rides upon the heaven is thy helper, and the magnificent One of the firmament. And the rule of God shall protect thee, and that under the strength of the everlasting arms; and he shall cast forth the enemy from before thy face, saying, Perish. And Israel shall dwell in confidence alone on the land of Jacob, with corn and wine; and the sky shall be misty with dew upon thee. Blessed art thou, O Israel; who is like to thee, O people saved by the Lord? thy helper shall hold his shield over thee, and his sword is thy boast; and thine enemies shall speak falsely to thee, and thou shalt tread upon their neck.” Sep Deu 33:1-29

Jesus Christ

Christ also has symbols that represent HIM.

Early Israelites painted Jesus with a halo which is a crown of light rays or circle that surrounds a person’s head in art work.  The halo meant the person in the artwork was holy.  Christ is shown many times with the cross within his halo which is known today as the Celtic cross.  The Celtic cross was used as a staff to find direction similar to how we use a compass today; therefore the picture is stating that Jesus provides directions for us to live and follow.

Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Christ Jesus.” 2 Cor 4:6

Conclusion

The tribes of Israel were never really lost since our Father in Heaven always knew where they were located.  The tribes were only stated as lost since they forgot who they were and they stopped following the laws of Moses. In the verse below James addressed the twelve tribes in his opening statement.

“James the servant of God, and of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.” DR James 1:1

It is important we understand that these symbols represent our heritage; therefore it is important that we preserve them for future generations. Our heritage is America.

Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.” ASV Mat 10:26

Unleavened Bread Feast & Redemption

Overview

The Unleavened Bread Feast is a seven day feast that has not yet been fulfilled.  In order for it to be completely fulfilled all first born sons of Jacob Israel must be redeemed back to their rightful owner.  The rightful owner is our Father in Heaven where they will be called to HIS service as priests.  At this time Jacob Israel’s children are in bondage to the beast system spoken of in the Revelation of John.   The first Unleavened Bread feast was when the children of Jacob Israel were being held in bondage as slaves by the Pharaoh of Egypt and our Father in Heaven redeemed them from bondage.  When Christ was crucified his death paid the redemption fee.

Our   Father in Heaven established the Feast of Unleavened Bread so that we would remember to follow only HIS word and laws.  We are to remember not to follow the ‘traditions of men’ and to beware of government leaders like Herod and the political groups like the Pharisees and the Sadducees in the days of Christ’s life.   Following the political leaders instead of our Father’s law leads to bondage and the curses in Deuteronomy chapter 28.

And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” DR Luke 12:1

And he charged them, saying: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.” DR Mark 8:15

Why do you not understand that it was not concerning the bread I said to you: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees? Then they understood that he said not that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”  DR Mat 16:11-12

For leaving the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, the washing of pots and of cups: and many other things you do like to these. And he said to them: Well do you make void the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition.”  DR Mark 7:8-9

Beware lest any man cheat you by philosophy, and vain deceit; according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ.”  DR Col 2:8

Unleavened Bread Feast

The Unleavened bread feast is the day after Passover.  The first day of the feast is when Israelites left Ramesses, Egypt and were free from bondage.  They took ingredients to make bread with them when leaving Egypt; however they were not to take leaven or yeast with them since unleavened bread is made without fermentation or yeast and can be made in a rush since no time is required for waiting for the bread to rise.  The Israelites were in a rush to get as far away from Egypt as possible.

The Israelites of today have the tradition of spring cleaning and they do not remember how this tradition started.  It started due to the fact that they were to remove all leaven foods from their home.  They were to ensure no leaven was found anywhere in their homes not even a crumb.  This page ‘What is Leaven’ provides a list of leavening agents to remove from our home.

Here are a couple of unleavened bread recipes that I have used and are very good:

Here is the definition of the word leaven from my 1913 Webster’s Dictionary:

The first day and the last day of the Unleavened bread feast are to be Holy assemblies of the congregation of Israel.  The only work that can be performed is the required to prepare the meal and sacrifices. All future generations of Jacob Israel are to celebrate this feast forever.

Seven days ye shall eat unleavened bread, and from the first day ye shall utterly remove leaven from your houses: whoever shall eat leaven, that soul shall be utterly destroyed from Israel, from the first day until the seventh day. And the first day shall be called holy, and the seventh day shall be a holy convocation to you: ye shall do no servile work on them, only as many things as will necessarily be done by every soul, this only shall be done by you. And ye shall keep this commandment, for on this day will I bring out your force out of the land of Egypt; and ye shall make this day a perpetual ordinance for you throughout your generations. Beginning the fourteenth day of the first month, ye shall eat unleavened bread from evening, till the twenty-first day of the month, till evening. Seven days leaven shall not be found in your houses; whosoever shall eat anything leavened, that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, both among the occupiers of the land and the original inhabitants. Ye shall eat nothing leavened, but in every habitation of your ye shall eat unleavened bread.”  Sep Exo 12:15-20

When we eat unleavened bread and hold it in our hand this bread is to represent the laws of Moses and righteousness.  When we put this bread in our mouth we are to remember the laws and remember that we were slaves in Egypt.  We became slaves because we did not follow the laws of Moses.

Sanctify [ ἅγιος (hágios): saint, devoted to our Father, holy & set-apart] to me every first-born, first produced, opening every womb among the children of Israel both of man and beast: it is mine. And Moses said to the people, Remember this day, in which ye came forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, for with a strong hand the Lord brought you forth thence; and leaven [ζύμη (zými) yeast; from the word  ζέω (zéō): bubble]  shall not be eaten. For on this day ye go forth in the month of new corn. And it shall come to pass when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land of the Chananites, and the Chettites, and Amorites, and Evites, and Jebusites, and Gergesites, and Pherezites, which he sware to thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt perform this service in this month. Six days ye shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day is a feast to the Lord. Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; nothing leavened shall be seen with thee, neither shalt thou have leaven in all thy borders. And thou shalt tell thy son in that day, saying, Therefore the Lord dealt thus with me, as I was going out of Egypt. And it shall be to thee a sign[ σημεῖον (sēmeîon) : mark, sign, token] upon thy hand and a memorial before thine eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in thy mouth, for with a strong hand the Lord God brought thee out of Egypt. And preserve ye this law according to the times of the seasons, from year to year. And it shall come to pass when the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land of the Chananites, as he sware to thy fathers, and shall give it thee, that thou shalt set apart every offspring opening the womb, the males to the Lord, every one that opens the womb out of the herds or among thy cattle, as many as thou shalt have: thou shalt sanctify the males to the Lord. Every offspring opening the womb of the ass thou shalt change for a sheep; and if thou wilt not change it, thou shalt redeem it: every first-born of man of thy sons shalt thou redeem. And if thy son should ask thee hereafter, saying, What is this? Then thou shalt say to him, With a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. And when Pharao hardened his heart so as not to send us away, he slew every first-born in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man and the first-born of beast; therefore do I sacrifice every offspring that opens the womb, the males to the Lord, and every first-born of my sons I will redeem. And it shall be for a sign upon thy hand, and immovable before thine eyes, for with a strong hand the Lord brought thee out of Egypt.” Sep Exo 13:2-16

Here we are told we are to bring whole burnt offerings as a sacrifice to our Father in Heaven.  We are to eat all of these except the goat sin offering in the presents of our Father in Heaven and the congregation of Israel.

And on the fifteenth day of this month is a feast; seven days ye shall eat unleavened bread. And the first day shall be to you a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work. And ye shall bring whole-burnt-offerings, a sacrifice to the Lord, two calves of the herd, one ram, seven lambs of a year old; they shall be to you without blemish. And their meat-offering shall be fine flour mingled with oil; three tenth deals for one calf, and two tenth deals for one ram. Thou shalt offer a tenth for each lamb, for the seven lambs.  And thou shalt offer one kid of the goats for a sin-offering, to make atonement for you. Beside the perpetual whole-burnt-offering in the morning, which is a whole-burnt-sacrifice for a continuance, these shall ye thus offer daily for seven days, a gift, a sacrifice for a sweet-smelling savour to the Lord; beside the continual whole-burnt-offering, thou shalt offer its drink-offering. And the seventh day shall be to you a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work in it.” Sep Num 28:17-25

Further instructions to the priesthood:

And on the fifteenth day of this month is the feast of unleavened bread to the Lord; seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread. And the first day shall be a holy convocation to you: ye shall do no servile work. And ye shall offer whole-burnt-offerings to the Lord seven days; and the seventh day shall be a holy convocation to you: ye shall do no servile work.” Sep Lev 23:6-8

Further instructions were given to the children of Israel prior to receiving the Promised Land.  They again were told that the unleavened bread represented affliction since they needed to hurry and get out of Egypt.

Thou shalt not eat leaven with it; seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread with it, bread of affliction, because ye came forth out of Egypt in haste; that ye may remember the day of your coming forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life. Leaven shall not be seen with thee in all thy borders for seven days, and there shall not be left of the flesh which thou shalt sacrifice at even on the first day until the morning.” Sep Deu 16:3-4
Six days shalt thou eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day is a holiday, a feast to the Lord thy God: thou shalt not do in it any work, save what must be done by any one.” Sep Deu 16:8

Many years later they recorded their keeping of the Unleavened Bread feast:

And the children of Israel who were present in Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great joy; and they continued to sing hymns to the Lord daily, and the priests and the Levites played on instruments to the Lord. And Ezekias encouraged all the Levites, and those that had good understanding of the Lord: and they completely kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days, offering peace-offerings, and confessing to the Lord God of their fathers. And the congregation purposed together to keep other seven days: and they kept seven days with gladness.” 2Ch 30:21-23

Unleavened Bread the Redemption of the First Born

On the night of the First Passover in Egypt our Father in Heaven killed all the first born children in the land of Egypt because the Pharao would not release the children of Jacob Israel and allow them to leave so that they could worship their Father in Heaven.  The Pharao was holding them in bondage as slaves. The Israelites were to put the blood of the lamb, that would later represent Christ bloodshed on the cross, on their door lintels so that the death angel would passover their homes and save Israel’s first born children lives.  Therefore, our Father in Heaven redeemed all of Israel’s first born and took them for himself to be priests on the date of the first Unleavened bread feast.

Sanctify to me every first-born, first produced, opening every womb among the children of Israel both of man and beast: it is mine.” Sep Exo 13:2

And when Pharao hardened his heart so as not to send us away, he slew every first-born in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man and the first-born of beast; therefore do I sacrifice every offspring that opens the womb, the males to the Lord, and every first-born of my sons I will redeem. And it shall be for a sign upon thy hand, and immovable before thine eyes, for with a strong hand the Lord brought thee out of Egypt.” Sep Exo 13:15-16

The law explains here that the first born son is to be dedicated to our Father in Heaven on the eight day after they are born.  On the eight day the sons are to be dedicated by circumcising them.  They are to be holy meaning set apart from the rest of the Israelites and be in service as priests for HIM.

Thou shalt not keep back the first-fruits of thy threshing floor and press. The first-born of thy sons thou shalt give to me. So shalt thou do with thy calf and thy sheep and thine ass; seven days shall it be under the mother, and the eighth day thou shalt give it to me. And ye shall be holy men to me; and ye shall not eat flesh taken of beasts, ye shall cast it to the dog.” Sep Exo 22:29-31

All children are to be presented to our Father in Heaven.  This used to be called a Christening when the baby would be given its Christian name.

Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Whatsoever woman shall have conceived and born a male child shall be unclean seven days, she shall be unclean according to the days of separation for her monthly courses. And on the eighth day she shall circumcise the flesh of his foreskin. And for thirty-three days she shall continue in her unclean blood; she shall touch nothing holy, and shall not enter the sanctuary, until the days of her purification be fulfilled. But if she should have born a female child, then she shall be unclean twice seven days, according to the time of her monthly courses; and for sixty-six days shall she remain in her unclean blood. And when the days of her purification shall have been fulfilled for a son or a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of a year old without blemish for a whole-burnt-offering, and a young pigeon or turtle-dove for a sin-offering to the door of the tabernacle of witness, to the priest. And he shall present it before the Lord, and the priest shall make atonement for her, and shall purge her from the fountain of her blood; this is the law of her who bears a male or a female.” Lev 12:2-7

It was required that all the sons of Jacob Israel bring their first born child to the Unleavened bread feast each year.  They were to attended the whole feast and be part of the holy assembly.

And thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread, as I have charged thee, at the season in the month of new corn; for in the month of new corn thou camest out from Egypt. The males are mine, everything that opens the womb; every first-born of oxen, and every first-born of sheep. And the first-born of an ass thou shalt redeem with a sheep, and if thou wilt not redeem it thou shalt pay a price: every first-born of thy sons shalt thou redeem: thou shalt not appear before me empty.” Sep Exo 34:18-20

It is at the Unleavened Bread Feast that our Father in Heaven regains possession of HIS rightful property.  If the Father does not bring his first born they are required to pay the price.  They were also to bring the first born of their livestock or pay the price.  Here is the 1913 Webster’s definition of ‘redeem’ and ‘ransom’.

The Levites become Priests Instead of the First Born

While camped in the wilderness the Israelites made themselves a golden calf to serve as their god and were dancing in circles around it.  Moses came down from the mountain and addressed the situation with the Israelites.  Then it was the Levites who stepped in and slew the rebellious stiff necked Israelites that would not repent of this sin.

“And when he drew nigh to the camp, he sees the calf and the dances; and Moses being very angry cast the two tables out of his hands, and broke them to pieces under the mountain. And having taken the calf which they made, he consumed it with fire, and ground it very small, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel to drink it. And Moses said to Aaron, What has this people done to thee, that thou hast brought upon them a great sin? And Aaron said to Moses, Be not angry, my lord, for thou knowest the impetuosity of this people. For they say to me, Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this man Moses, who brought us out of Egypt, we do not know what is become of him. And I said to them, If any one has golden ornaments, take them off; and they gave them me, and I cast them into the fire, and there came out this calf. And when Moses saw that the people was scattered, --for Aaron had scattered them so as to be a rejoicing to their enemies, -- then stood Moses at the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come to me. Then all the sons of Levi came to him. And he says to them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every one his sword on his thigh, and go through and return from gate to gate through the camp, and slay every one his brother, and every one his neighbour, and every one him that is nearest to him. And the sons of Levi did as Moses spoke to them, and there fell of the people in that day to the number of three thousand men. And Moses said to them, Ye have filled your hands this day to the Lord each one on his son or on his brother, so that blessing should be given to you.” Sep Exo 32:19-29

The Levites received the blessing and became temporally in charge of the priesthood until Christ was crucified.  Their main responsibility was to oversee the temple and to repent for the children of Jacob Israel’s sin.  The English word atone is actually two words ‘at one’.  The word atone means to be reconciled or ‘at one’ with our Heavenly Father.  The act of atoning means to make reparations or to pay for a crime committed.  Our Father required goats as payment for sin. Once the goat was burnt as a sin-offering, the debt was considered paid in full and the sin commented was covered over or forgotten.  Today we are required to ask Jesus for forgiveness of our sin so that we are reconciled with him and by the gift of grace (instead of goats) our sins are covered over and forgotten.  Therefore the Levites are no longer necessary since we have no temple and no longer sacrifice goats for sin.   Sin is transgression of the laws documented by Moses.
Since the first born males of Israel exceeded the number of the Levites, the first born Israelites had to pay the ransom fee for their excess since it was not an even swap.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Count every first-born male of the children of Israel from a month old and upwards, and take the number by name. And thou shalt take the Levites for me--I am the Lord--instead of all the first-born of the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the first-born among the cattle of the children of Israel. And Moses counted, as the Lord commanded him, every first-born among the children of Israel. And all the male first-born in number by name, from a month old and upwards, were according to their numbering twenty-two thousand and two hundred and seventy-three. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Take the Levites instead of all the first-born of the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle, and the Levites shall be mine; I am the Lord.  And for the ransoms of the two hundred and seventy-three which exceed the Levites in number of the first-born of the sons of Israel; thou shalt even take five shekels a head; thou shalt take them according to the holy didrachm, twenty oboli to the shekel. And thou shalt give the money to Aaron and to his sons, the ransom of those who exceed in number among them. And Moses took the silver, the ransom of those that exceeded in number the redemption of the Levites.” Sep Num 3:40-49

And thou shalt separate the Levites from the midst of the sons of Israel, and they shall be mine. And afterwards the Levites shall go in to perform the works of the tabernacle of witness; and thou shalt purify them, and present them before the Lord.  For these are given to me for a present out of the midst of the children of Israel: I have taken them to myself instead of all the first-born of the sons of Israel that open every womb. For every first-born among the children of Israel is mine, whether of man or beast: in the day in which I smote every first-born in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them to myself. And I took the Levites in the place of every first-born among the children of Israel. And I gave the Levites presented as a gift to Aaron and his sons out of the midst of the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of witness, and to make atonement for the children of Israel: thus there shall be none among the sons of Israel to draw nigh to the holy things.” Sep Num 8:14-19

The First Born still must be Redeemed

Even though the Levites received the blessing of the priesthood at the tabernacle, the first born must still be redeemed at the cost of 5 shekels each and this is called the covenant of salt.  This ordinance was to last forever.

All the first-fruits that are in their land, whatsoever they shall offer to the Lord, shall be thine: every clean person in thy house shall eat them. Every devoted thing among the children of Israel shall be thine. And every thing that opens the womb of all flesh, whatsoever they bring to the Lord, whether man or beast, shall be thine: only the first-born of men shall be surely redeemed, and thou shalt redeem the first-born of unclean cattle. And the redemption of them shall be from a month old; their valuation of five shekels--it is twenty oboli according to the holy shekel. But thou shalt not redeem the first-born of calves and the first-born of sheep and the first-born of goats; they are holy: and thou shalt pour their blood upon the altar, and thou shalt offer the fat as a burnt-offering for a smell of sweet savour to the Lord. And the flesh shall be thine, as also the breast of the wave-offering and as the right shoulder, it shall be thine. Every special offering of the holy things, whatsoever the children of Israel shall specially offer to the Lord, I have given to thee and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, a perpetual ordinance: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the Lord, for thee and thy seed after thee.” Sep Num 18:13-10

The redemption of the first born to their priesthood status has not been fulfilled and will probably be fulfilled during the feast of Unleavened Bread.

First Born Redemption Fee

In Exodus the first born children of the Egyptian paid the redemption fee for Israel’s sins that got them into bondage of slavery. When Jesus was crucified on Passover he paid the redemption fee for Israel’s sin.

And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them: Commanding we commanded you, that you should not teach in this name; and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and you have a mind to bring the blood of this man upon us. But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men. The God of our fathers hath raised up Jesus, whom you put to death, hanging him upon a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand, to be Prince and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins. And we are witnesses of these things and the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to all that obey him.”  DR Acts 5:27-32

The redemption fee was paid when Jesus died and the graves were open.  Many saints arose and came out of their tombs.

And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent. And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose, And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many.” DR Mat 27:50

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins; Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature  DR Col 1:14-15

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who by the Holy Ghost offered himself unspotted unto God, cleanse our conscience from dead works, to serve the living God? And therefore he is the mediator of the new testament: that by means of his death, for the redemption of those trangressions, which were under the former testament, they that are called may receive the promise of eternal inheritance.” DR Heb 9:14-15

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection. In these the second death hath no power; but they shall be priests of God and of Christ; and shall reign with him a thousand years.” DR Rev 20:6

It would appear now that the first born children of Israel’s redemption fees have been paid by Jesus Christ.  However, not all Israel has been yet redeemed.  Paul states the Holy Spirit seals you until the day of redemption.  Therefore the Unleavened Bread feast is only partially fulfilled and those of us now living in bondage will need redemption.

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God: whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption.”  DR Eph 4:30

For all the promises of God are in him, It is; therefore also by him, amen to God, unto our glory. Now he that confirmeth us with you in Christ, and that hath anointed us, is God: Who also hath sealed us, and given the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts.” DR 2 Cor 1:20-22
To the end that we should be unto the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ:
in whom ye also, having heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation,--in whom, having also believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is an earnest of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God's own possession, unto the praise of his glory
.” ASV Eph 1:13-14

It is the first born who are the priests in the kingdom:

“And they sung a new canticle, saying: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to take the book, and to open the seals thereof; because thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God, in thy blood, out of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation. And hast made us to our God a kingdom and priests, and we shall reign on the earth.” DR Rev 5:9-10

It is the first born who will be sealed and are our Father in Heaven’s servants:

And I saw another angel ascend from the sunrising, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a great voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we shall have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads. And I heard the number of them that were sealed, a hundred and forty and four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel: Of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.” DR Rev 7:2-8

The 144,000 sealed selected from the first born that lived through the “great tribulation”.  They washed their ropes; meaning they repented of their sins and changed their behavior to follow the laws of Moses the best that they could. They are white and pure.  They believe in Jesus Christ and HIS word; they stand on the right side of Jesus Christ and know who HIS enemies were.  They have the same enemies as Christ did.

And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, These that are arrayed in white robes, who are they, and whence came they? And I say unto him, My lord, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they that come of the great tribulation, and they washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God; and they serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall spread his tabernacle over them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun strike upon them, nor any heat: for the Lamb that is in the midst of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them unto fountains of waters of life: and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes.” DR Rev 7:13-17

The first born are called to sing the biblical text, as if it were a ‘new song’ since many living during the ‘great tribulation’ will never hear or understand the true gospel of Jesus Christ, the laws of Moses and the words of the prophets.

And I beheld, and lo a lamb stood upon mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty-four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the noise of many waters, and as the voice of great thunder; and the voice which I heard, was as the voice of harpers, harping on their harps. And they sung as it were a new canticle [song with biblical text], before the throne, and before the four living creatures, and the ancients; and no man could say the canticle, but those hundred forty-four thousand, who were purchased from the earth. These are they who were not defiled [impure, containing undesired intermixtures] with women: for they are virgins. These follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were purchased from among men, the firstfruits to God and to the Lamb: And in their mouth there was found no lie; for they are without spot before the throne of God.” DR Rev 14:1-5

Conclusion

In prophecy the Unleavened Bread Feast will probably be when our Father in Heaven may give HIS ransomed people a path back to Zion.

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Jehovah; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Is it not thou that didst cut Rahab in pieces, that didst pierce the monster? Is it not thou that driedst up the sea, the waters of the great deep; that madest the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over? And the ransomed of Jehovah shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”  DR Isa 51

And so all Israel should be saved, as it is written: There shall come out of Sion, he that shall deliver, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob. And this is to them my covenant: when I shall take away their sins. As concerning the gospel, indeed, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are most dear for the sake of the fathers.”  DR Romans 11:26-28

"And thou shalt say to Pharao, These things saith the Lord, Israel is my first-born." Sep Exo 4:22

During the Unleavened Bread Feast we are to remember to be humble and not puffed up with pride.  We are to remember the covenant of salt and keep our life pure and away from evil.

Your glorying is not good. Know you not that a little leaven corrupteth the whole lump ? Purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new paste, as you are unleavened. For Christ our pasch is sacrificed. Therefore let us feast, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. I wrote to you in an epistle, not to keep company with fornicators. I mean not with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or the extortioners, or the servers of idols; otherwise you must needs go out of this world.”  1 Cor 5:6-10

Jude warned two thousand years ago that there were men who crept into our congregations who were ungodly that will be condemned.   They are ‘wolfs in sheep’s clothing’ who actually deny Jesus Christ our Master privately. We must be able to spot these people within our congregation and remove them since they only teach falsely.

Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in privily, even they who were of old written of beforehand unto this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” ASV Jude 1:3-4

Praise our Father who is in Heaven!
