Peleg and the Tower of Babel

Overview

Researching the old books and newspapers regarding the Tower of Babel turned out very interesting, in fact more interesting than I thought it would be.  It turns out that it used to be well known that the Tower of Babel was a pyramid with a temple.  In fact it is stated that every pyramid is a copy of the holy mountain of the ancient garden and where the ark landed.  This means that the holy mountain called Mount Zion, Paradise being the Garden of Eden and where the ark landed on Mount Ararat were all thought to be in the same area.  The word Ararat means ‘sacred land or high place’ just as Mount Zion is also called the ‘Holy Mountain’ (also see this book, page 236).

The picture below is what I think the Tower of Babel could have looked like based on the descriptions provided in the old newspapers and books I read which are provided below.

You will notice that not all of the newspaper articles and books agree exactly with each other but some show very similar descriptions.

The Tower of Babel according to the Bible

Noah and his descendants had been living in the area of where the ark landed on Mount Ararat. They migrated away and found a plain in the land of Senaar (Shinar) where they built the Tower of Babel. The definition of the words city and tower reflect that the Tower of Babel could have been a pyramid that is sometimes also called a mound, burgh, or tumuli.  Noah and his descendant had been speaking the same language prior to the tower being built.

“And all the earth was one lip, and there was one language to all. And it came to pass as they moved from the east, they found a plain in the land of Senaar, and they dwelt there. And a man said to his neighbour, Come, let us make bricks and bake them with fire. And the brick was to them for stone, and their mortar was bitumen. And they said, Come, let us build to ourselves a city [G4172 πόλις (polis); city, usually walled] and tower [G4444 πόλις (purgos); tower or castle; a primary word "burgh". Burgh is a small mound often used in reference to tumuli. A tumuli is a heap of earth, mound, hill, knoll, hillock (possibly a grave).}, whose top shall be to heaven, and let us make to ourselves a name, before we are scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men built. And the Lord said, Behold, there is one race, and one lip of all, and they have begun to do this, and now nothing shall fail from them of all that they may have undertaken to do. Come, and having gone down let us there confound their tongue, that they may not understand each the voice of his neighbour. And the Lord scattered them thence over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city and the tower. On this account its name was called Confusion, because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and thence the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth.”  Sep Gen 11-1-9

Above I give the concordance definitions for the words ‘city’ and ‘tower’ for the original Greek words used in the Septuagint.  Below I give the Latin words and definitions plus the modern block Hebrew words and definitions for these same words.

“et dixerunt venite faciamus nobis civitatem [a city, a boroug,: a walled settlement. Doublet of burgh (mound or tumuli).] et turrem [tower] cuius culmen pertingat ad caelum et celebremus nomen nostrum antequam dividamur in universas terras” LV Gen 11:4

“And the Lord came down to see the city [civitatem, definition above] and the tower [turrem], which the children of Adam were building.” DR Gen 11:5

“And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower [H4026 migdal or migdalah: a tower (from its size or height); by analogy, a rostrum; figuratively, a pyramidal bed of flowers -- castle, flower, tower.], which the children of men builded.” KJVA Gen 11:5

According to many bible versions the name of the tower was Babel which means confusion.  The Greek Septuagint was translated from Paleo-Hebrew to Greek in about285 BC and it never mentions the name Babel anywhere.

“On this account its name was called Confusion [G4799 σύγχυσις (sugchusis); a commixture, confusion, disturbance ], because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and thence the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth.” Sep Gen 11:9

In 382 AD when the bible was translated in Latin the word ‘Babel’ was used as a place name for where this event took happened.  The word Babel has been used ever since this time and our bibles states that this place was called Babel because this is where the confusion of languages took place.

“et idcirco vocatum est nomen eius Babel [confused mixture of sounds and voices, especially in different languages] quia ibi confusum [mixed, mingled, having been poured together] est labium universae terrae et inde dispersit eos Dominus super faciem cunctarum regionum” LV Gen 11:9

“Therefore was its name called Babel; because Jehovah there confounded the language of the whole earth. And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth.” DR Gen 11:9

When the bible was translated to the Massoretic text (modern orblock Hebrew) in about 750 AD, they used the word Bavel.

“Therefore is the name of it called Babel [H894 bavel; a capital city]; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.” KJV Gen 11:9

Today many bible concordances state that the place name Babylon comes from the name Babel and they state that Babylon means ‘gate of God’.  I do not see how this could be true. I really think that Babel (Confusion) and Babylon (Gate of God) maybe two different places. This is because Nimrod ruled Babel and the Chaldeans that lived east of the Euphrates ruled Babylon. This needs to be studied further though.

The Tower of Babel according to Jubilees

The Book of Jubilees states the Tower of Babel took 43 years to build and it also gives the dimensions.

“And in the three and thirtieth jubilee, in the first year in the second week, Peleg took to himself a wife, whose name was Lomna the daughter of Sina'ar, and she bare him a son in the fourth year of this week, and he called his name Reu; for he said: 'Behold the children of men have become evil through the wicked purpose of building for themselves a city and a tower in the land of Shinar.' For they departed from the land of Ararat eastward to Shinar; for in his days they built the city and the tower, saying, 'Go to, let us ascend thereby into heaven.' And they began to build, and in the fourth week they made brick with fire, and the bricks served them for stone, and the clay with which they cemented them together was asphalt which comes out of the sea, and out of the fountains of water in the land of Shinar. And they built it: forty and three years [1645-1688 A.M.] were they building it; its breadth was 203 bricks, and the height (of a brick) was the third of one; its height amounted to 5433 cubits and 2 palms, and (the extent of one wall was) thirteen stades (and of the other thirty stades). And the Lord our God said unto us: Behold, they are one people, and (this) they begin to do, and now nothing will be withholden from them. Go to, let us go down and confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech, and they may be dispersed into cities and nations, and one purpose will no longer abide with them till the day of judgment.' And the Lord descended, and we descended with him to see the city and the tower which the children of men had built. And he confounded their language, and they no longer understood one another's speech, and they ceased then to build the city and the tower. For this reason the whole land of Shinar is called Babel, because the Lord did there confound all the language of the children of men, and from thence they were dispersed into their cities, each according to his language and his nation. And the Lord sent a mighty wind against the tower and overthrew it upon the earth, and behold it was between Asshur and Babylon in the land of Shinar, and they called its name 'Overthrow'. In the fourth week in the first year [1688 A.M.] in the beginning thereof in the four and thirtieth jubilee, were they dispersed from the land of Shinar.” Jubilees 10:19-27

According to Jubilees the tower was 5,433 cubits and 2 palms which would be 8,150 feet or 1.6 miles high.  This description is way higher than the other sources below. So I wonder if they built it in a place that had a high elevation.

According to the Book of Jubilees, Adam’s descendants lost their original language at the Tower of Babel.  Below reflects that the original language was revealed to Abraham and then he was able to read the ancient text.

“And I will be a God to thee and thy son, and to thy son's son, and to all thy seed: fear not, from henceforth and unto all generations of the earth I am thy God.' And the Lord God said: 'Open his mouth and his ears, that he may hear and speak with his mouth, with the language which has been revealed'; for it had ceased from the mouths of all the children of men from the day of the overthrow (of Babel). And I opened his mouth, and his ears and his lips, and I began to speak with him in Hebrew in the tongue of the creation. And he took the books of his fathers, and these were written in Hebrew, and he transcribed them, and he began from henceforth to study them, and I made known to him that which he could not (understand), and he studied them during the six rainy months.” Jubilees 12:24-28

The Tower of Babel according to Jasher

From the Book of Jasher

“And king Nimrod reigned securely, and all the earth was under his control, and all the earth was of one tongue and words of union.  And all the princes of Nimrod and his great men took counsel together; Phut, Mitzraim, Cush and Canaan with their families, and they said to each other, Come let us build ourselves a city and in it a strong tower, and its top reaching heaven, and we will make ourselves famed, so that we may reign upon the whole world, in order that the evil of our enemies may cease from us, that we may reign mightily over them, and that we may not become scattered over the earth on account of their wars.  And they all went before the king, and they told the king these words, and the king agreed with them in this affair, and he did so.  And all the families assembled consisting of about six hundred thousand men, and they went to seek an extensive piece of ground to build the city and the tower, and they sought in the whole earth and they found none like one valley at the east of the land of Shinar, about two days' walk, and they journeyed there and they dwelt there. And they began to make bricks and burn fires to build the city and the tower that they had imagined to complete. And the building of the tower was unto them a transgression and a sin, and they began to build it, and whilst they were building against the Lord God of heaven, they imagined in their hearts to war against him and to ascend into heaven. And all these people and all the families divided themselves in three parts; the first said We will ascend into heaven and fight against him; the second said, We will ascend to heaven and place our own gods there and serve them; and the third part said, We will ascend to heaven and smite him with bows and spears; and God knew all their works and all their evil thoughts, and he saw the city and the tower which they were building. And when they were building they built themselves a great city and a very high and strong tower; and on account of its height the mortar and bricks did not reach the builders in their ascent to it, until those who went up had completed a full year, and after that, they reached to the builders and gave them the mortar and the bricks; thus was it done daily. And behold these ascended and others descended the whole day; and if a brick should fall from their hands and get broken, they would all weep over it, and if a man fell and died, none of them would look at him. And the Lord knew their thoughts, and it came to pass when they were building they cast the arrows toward the heavens, and all the arrows fell upon them filled with blood, and when they saw them they said to each other, Surely we have slain all those that are in heaven.  For this was from the Lord in order to cause them to err, and in order; to destroy them from off the face of the ground. And they built the tower and the city, and they did this thing daily until many days and years were elapsed.  And God said to the seventy angels who stood foremost before him, to those who were near to him, saying, Come let us descend and confuse their tongues, that one man shall not understand the language of his neighbor, and they did so unto them. And from that day following, they forgot each man his neighbor's tongue, and they could not understand to speak in one tongue, and when the builder took from the hands of his neighbor lime or stone which he did not order, the builder would cast it away and throw it upon his neighbor, that he would die. And they did so many days, and they killed many of them in this manner.  And the Lord smote the three divisions that were there, and he punished them according to their works and designs; those who said, We will ascend to heaven and serve our gods, became like apes and elephants; and those who said, We will smite the heaven with arrows, the Lord killed them, one man through the hand of his neighbor; and the third division of those who said, We will ascend to heaven and fight against him, the Lord scattered them throughout the earth.  And those who were left amongst them, when they knew and understood the evil which was coming upon them, they forsook the building, and they also became scattered upon the face of the whole earth.  And they ceased building the city and the tower; therefore he called that place Babel, for there the Lord confounded the Language of the whole earth; behold it was at the east of the land of Shinar. And as to the tower which the sons of men built, the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up one third part thereof, and a fire also descended from heaven and burned another third, and the other third is left to this day, and it is of that part which was aloft, and its circumference is three days' walk.  And many of the sons of men died in that tower, a people without number.” Jasher 9:20-39

The Tower of Babel according to Josephus

Josephus, a first century historian, gives the following information about the Tower of Babel in chapter 4 of his history:

“Now the sons of Noah were three,—Shem, Japhet, and Ham, born one hundred years before the Deluge. These first of all descended from the mountains into the plains, and fixed their habitation there; and persuaded others who were greatly afraid of the lower grounds on account of the flood, and so were very loath to come down from the higher places, to venture to follow their examples. Now the plain in which they first dwelt was called Shinar. God also commanded them to send colonies abroad, for the thorough peopling of the earth, that they might not raise seditions among themselves, but might cultivate a great part of the earth, and enjoy its fruits after a plentiful manner. But they were so ill instructed that they did not obey God; for which reason they fell into calamities, and were made sensible, by experience, of what sin they had been guilty: for when they flourished with a numerous youth, God admonished them again to send out colonies; but they, imagining the prosperity they enjoyed was not derived from the favor of God, but supposing that their own power was the proper cause of the plentiful condition they were in, did not obey him. Nay, they added to this their disobedience to the Divine will, the suspicion that they were therefore ordered to send out separate colonies, that, being divided asunder, they might the more easily be Oppressed.

Now it was Nimrod who excited them to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham, the son of Noah, a bold man, and of great strength of hand. He persuaded them not to ascribe it to God, as if it was through his means they were happy, but to believe that it was their own courage which procured that happiness. He also gradually changed the government into tyranny, seeing no other way of turning men from the fear of God, but to bring them into a constant dependence on his power. He also said he would be revenged on God, if he should have a mind to drown the world again; for that he would build a tower too high for the waters to be able to reach! and that he would avenge himself on God for destroying their forefathers!

Now the multitude were very ready to follow the determination of Nimrod, and to esteem it a piece of cowardice to submit to God; and they built a tower, neither sparing any pains, nor being in any degree negligent about the work: and, by reason of the multitude of hands employed in it, it grew very high, sooner than any one could expect; but the thickness of it was so great, and it was so strongly built, that thereby its great height seemed, upon the view, to be less than it really was. It was built of burnt brick, cemented together with mortar, made of bitumen, that it might not be liable to admit water. When God saw that they acted so madly, he did not resolve to destroy them utterly, since they were not grown wiser by the destruction of the former sinners; but he caused a tumult among them, by producing in them divers languages, and causing that, through the multitude of those languages, they should not be able to understand one another. The place wherein they built the tower is now called Babylon, because of the confusion of that language which they readily understood before; for the Hebrews mean by the word Babel, confusion. The Sibyl also makes mention of this tower, and of the confusion of the language, when she says thus: "When all men were of one language, some of them built a high tower, as if they would thereby ascend up to heaven, but the gods sent storms of wind and overthrew the tower, and gave every one his peculiar language; and for this reason it was that the city was called Babylon." But as to the plan of Shinar, in the country of Babylonia, Hestiaeus mentions it, when he says thus: "Such of the priests as were saved, took the sacred vessels of Jupiter Enyalius, and came to Shinar of Babylonia."” From Flavii Iosephi Opera, Volumn 1, chapter 4  https://sites.google.com/site/latinjosephus/antiquities/book-1

1818 Book - ‘Horæ Mosaicæ’

As stated below every pyramid is a copy of the holy mountain of the primeval (antediluvian) garden and where the ark landed.

The pyramid of Cholula is the largest in the whole world. Since the time it was originally built it has been built over by others; making it hard to know what it originally used to look like.

1829 Book – The Works of Sir Walter Raleigh, Volume 2

Belus was the inventor of astronomy and there was a statue of him in the temple. Belus’ tomb was a square pyramid that was a furlong high and the sides were also a furlong.  A furlong is equal to 220 yards or 660 feet.

1834 News – Temple of Belus/Babel

The Temple of Babel was also known as the Temple of Belus.  The article below also reflects the base of the tower was square and it was 600 feet square at the base.  It has eight massive towers piled on each other and each were 25 feet high.  There was an astronomical observatory on top.

From column 1 https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/data/batches/arhi_elvis_ver01/data/sn87062070/0039334295A/1834102401/0813.pdf

Flavius Josephus, a first century historian, tells us that Noah and his forefathers lived many years so that they would have time to work on astronomical and geometrical discoveries:

“God afforded them a longer time of life on account of their virtue, and the good use they made of it in astronomical and geometrical discoveries, which would not have afforded the time of foretelling [the periods of the stars] unless they had lived six hundred years; for the great year is completed in that interval.”

1874 Book – The Builders of Babel

In this book the author states that Pelasgi were the Toltecs and they built the pyramids in Central America.  Later in this article, I show evidence that the Pelasgi were descendants of Peleg the Grand Architect.

Page 80 and 81 https://archive.org/details/buildersbabel00mcagoog/page/n98/mode/2up?view=theater

It is thought that the Pelasgi’s are descendants of Peleg (more on this later) and Peleg was known as an architect; therefore it is interesting that their tribal appellation is a synonym for ‘architect’.  According to this book (below), the Aztec forefathers built temples and tumuli (mounds of earth).  The pyramid of Cholula is like the Temple of Belus (Babel)  as described by Herodotus.

It had receding terraces crowned with an elaborately decorated ‘House of God’ – a sanctuary.

1876 Book – Cory’s Ancient Fragments

The book below also mentions the Tower of Babel.  It mentions Saturn who is actually Noah (see page 265 of the book Patriarchal Age by George Smith) by some authorities.  The Titans are descendant from Shem (seepage 622 of the book Gentile Nations by George Smith). Kronus is Ham (see page 620 of Gentile Nation by George Smith).  For more information about these names see this page called Forgotten History. The names vary from the bible since at the Tower of Babel the tribes received new languages and that included new nouns.

At the time of the Tower of Babel there were three kings as show below;

·         Descendant of Ham’s son Cush: Nimrod the king according to nature.

·         Descendant of Shem’s son Arphaxad: Peleg the king according to art.

·         Descendant of Shem’s son Asshur:  Nin according to authority.

The height was 17 cubits which is 25.5 feet. The breadth is 72 paces which is about 180 feet.

If you would like more information about the 72 languages and tribes, please see this pdf document.  http://austriaca.at/0xc1aa5576%200x00137117.pdf

According to Genesis chapter 10, Japheth had 14 descendants, Ham had 31 descendants and Shem had 26 descendants; this totals 71 descendants.

Peleg the Grand Architect

Peleg historically was known as the Grand Architect of the Tower of Babel.  The word architect comes from the Greek word arkhitéktōn that means chief constructor, master builder.  The book above tells us that Peleg was king according to art.  The word ‘art’ comes from the Latin word ‘ars’ meaning art, skill, craft, handicraft, trade, and power.

Heber (Eber), who was the progenitor of the Hebrew people, had two sons Phaleg (Faleg, Peleg) and Jektan (Iectan, Joktan).  The bible tells us that the earth was divided during the days of Phaleg and below we do find that Phaleg traveled to Europe and his ashes are buried there.  It is thought that Joktan’s descendants migrated to Yucatan and built pyramids there (more information about Joktan at Yucatan here).  Below I show the first mention of Peleg in various versions of the bible in order to see the different spellings of Heber’s, Peleg’s and Joktan’s names.

And to Heber were born two sons, the name of the one, Phaleg, because in his days the earth was divided, and the name of his brother Jektan. Sep Gen 10:25

natique sunt Eber filii duo nomen uni Faleg eo quod in diebus eius divisa sit terra et nomen fratris eius Iectan LV Gen 10:25

And to Heber were born two sons: the name of the one was Phaleg, because in his days was the earth divided: and his brother's name Jectan. DR Gen 10:25

And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. KJVA Gen 10:25

According to the Brenton translation of the Greek Septuagint Peleg lived 339 years.  According to the Latin Vulgate based bibles including the King James Version, Peleg lived 239 years.  All versions agree that Peleg had a son named Ragau (Reu) plus he also had other sons and daughters who are not named (even though his brother’s sons are named).

“And Heber lived after he had begotten Phaleg two hundred and seventy years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.  And Phaleg lived and hundred and thirty years, and begot Ragau. And Phaleg lived after he had begotten Ragau, two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.” Sep Gen 11:17-19

“et vixit Eber postquam genuit Faleg quadringentis triginta annis et genuit filios et filias  vixit quoque Faleg triginta [thirty, 30] annis et genuit Reu vixitque Faleg postquam genuit Reu ducentis[two hundred] novem [nine, 9] annis et genuit filios et filias” Gen 11:17-19

“And Heber lived after he begot Phaleg, four hundred and thirty years: and begot sons and daughters. Phaleg also lived thirty years, and begot Reu. And Phaleg lived after he begot Reu, two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.” DR Gen 11:17-19

“And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters. And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu: And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.” KJVA Gen 11:17-19

Peleg’s ancestry from Chronicles reflects that Peleg was a descendant of Sem’s son Arphaxad:

“The sons of Sem, Ælam, and Assur, and Arphaxad, Sala,Eber, Pheleg, Ragan, Seruch, Nachor, Tharrha, Abraam” Sep 1Ch 1:17-27

“Sem Arfaxad Sale Heber Phaleg Raau Serug Nahor Thare Abram iste est Abraham”. LV 1Ch 1:24-27

“Sem, Arphaxad, Sale, Heber, Phaleg, Ragau, Serug, Nachor, Thare, Abram, this is Abraham.” DR 1Ch 1:24-27

“Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, Terah, Abram; the same is Abraham.” KJVA 1Ch 1:24-27

Reflected below is Peleg’s ancestry from Noah (Noe) to Jacob and this chapter of the Apostle Luke shows that Peleg was Jesus Christ’s ancestor:

“Who was of Jacob, who was of Isaac, who was of Abraham, who was of Thare, who was of Nachor, Who was of Sarug, who was of Ragau, who was of Phaleg, who was of Heber, who was of Sale, Who was of Cainan, who was of Arphaxad, who was of Sem, who was Of Noe, who was of Lamech DR Luk 3:34-36

“Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala, Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech KJVA Luk 3:34-36

The book Auraicept Na N-Eces was translated into English from Old Irish as shown below.  Peleg’ s old Irish name was Fallec or Faillec.

1829 Book – Light on Masonry

According to the book below Chevaliers (knights) wear a triangle in memory of the temple of Peleg. It also states that Peleg went to live in North Germany and he built a temple in the shape of a triangle there.  Of course a pyramid is in the shape of a triangle.

1894 News – Peleg’s ashes in Prussia

The news article below informs us that Peleg was the Grand Architect of the Tower of Babel.

“Here rests the ashes of Peleg, grand architect of the Tower of Babel.  The Almighty had pity on him because he became humble.”

The pyramid of Hellenkion in Argos Greece was built by the Pelasgians, at least that is what I think and this one page of pinterest also agrees https://www.pinterest.com/pin/704391197945531224/.  This pyramid in Greece was built using the same type of construction as some walls in Peru and other places in the world (see https://hiddenincatours.com/amazing-ancient-inca-roca-polygonal-walls-cusco/  and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacsayhuam%C3%A1n  ).

The High Places in the Bible

I believe that after the Tower of Babel event occurred, the children of Noah continued to build these towers/pyramids that are called ‘High Places’ in most bible versions.  Here we will look at the four versions to get a clear meaning of what our Father in Heaven asked to be destroyed so we get an idea of the meaning of ‘high places’.

“Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Ye are to pass over Jordan into the land of Chanaan. And ye shall destroy all that dwell in the land before your face, and ye shall abolish their high places [G4648.1  σκοπιάς (skopiás); height or watchtower, Google translation is watchtower,], and all their molten images ye shall destroy, and ye shall demolish all their pillars [G4739.1 στήλας; stone or sacred monuments, block of stone, block of stone used as a buttress to a wall or monument].” Sep Num 33:51-52

“disperdite [destroy or ruin] cunctos [collectively, whole] habitatores [dweller, inhabitant] regionis [boundary, region] illius [that, those] confringite [destroy, break into pieces] titulos [title, placard, inscription] et statuas [statue, usually made of metal] comminuite [break] atque [and, also, even] Omnia [every, all] excelsa [elevated, lofty] vastate [I devastate, ravage or lay waste]” LV Num 33:52

“Destroy all the inhabitants of that land: Beat down their pillars [titulos, title, inscriptions (see above)], and break in pieces their statues [statuas, metal statues (see above)], and waste all their high [excelsa, elevated (see above)] places.” DR Num 33:52

“Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures [H4906 maskith; showpiece, figure, imagination, carved figure of idolatrous symbols], and destroy all their molten images [H4541 massekah; a libation, molten metal or image], and quite pluck down all their high places [H1116 bamah; meaning to be high, an elevation, height, high place, wave.]”… KJV Num 33:52

Therefore our Father in Heaven asked the Israelites to destroy the watch towers that were on high or elevated places, metal statues, and inscriptions.

The ‘High Places’ are mentioned numerous times in our bible.  The Brenton Septuagint mentions ‘high places’ 67 times.  The King James Versions mentions ‘high places’ 91 times and the Douray Rheims mentions it 76 times.  Below are several of these verses.  These verses show that sin occurred in the ‘high places’ (just as we see sin occurring in our churches today).  Notice they were idolizing and serving the sun, moon, twelve signs (constellations) and the 1834 news article above called the Temple of Belus stated that the Tower of Babel had an astronomical observatory.  I do not think it is a sin to have an astronomical observatory for tracking the movement of the sun, moon, planets and stars since Genesis 1:14-19 tells us that they are to be used for seasons, signs, days and years (telling of time).  The issue was idolzing them, serving them, and even lighting incense to them.

“And he [Manasseh] turned, and built up the high places, which Ezechias, his father, had destroyed: and he set up altars to Baal, and made groves, as Achab, the king of Israel, had done: and he adored all the host of heaven, and served them.” DR 2Ki 21:3

“And he [Josiah] destroyed the soothsayers, whom the kings of Juda had appointed to sacrifice in the high places in the cities of Juda, and round about Jerusalem: them also that burnt incense to Baal, and to the sun, and to the moon, and to the twelve signs, and to all the host of heaven.” DR 2Ki 23:5

This verse indicates there were temples on the high places and the book called The Builders of Babel stated there was a ‘House of God’ which was called a sanctuary on the Tower of Babel (shown above).

“Moreover all the temples of the high places which were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord, Josias took away: and he did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel. And he slew all the priests of the high places, that were there, upon the altars; and he burnt men's bones upon them: and returned to Jerusalem.” DR 2Ki 23:19-20

“And Asa did that which was good and pleasing in the sight of his God, and he destroyed the altars of foreign worship, and the high places.” DR 2Ch 14:2

“And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Ennom, to burn their sons, and their daughters in the fire: which I commanded not, nor thought on in my heart.” Dr Jer 7:31

“And they have built the high places of Baalim, to burn their children with fire for a holocaust [from Greek word meaning whole burnt offering] to Baalim: which I did not command, nor speak of, neither did it once come into my mind.” DR Jer 19:5

“Son of man set thy face towards the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them. And say: Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God: Thus saith the Lord God to the mountains, and to the hills, and to the rocks, and the valleys: Behold, I will bring upon you the sword, and I will destroy your high places.” DR Eze 6:2-3

“For behold the Lord will come forth out of his place: and he will come down, and will tread upon the high places of the earth. And the mountains shall be melted under him: and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as waters that run down a steep place. For the wickedness of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the wickedness of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Juda? are they not Jerusalem?” DR Mic 1:3-5

Conclusion

When I started researching the Tower of Babel this was not the information I expected to find. The art that the Semites and Peleg had obtained appears to have been the skill of orienting structures cardinally and that he understood the use of angles and alignments.  The astronomical observatory I’m sure was there to track the sun, moon and the stars for telling time (Genesis 1:16).  The Semites did like to track Venus and record it movements.   It appears that Shem’s descendant continued building pyramids all over the world as a reminder of Paradise on the Holy Mountain.

Our father in heaven does not repent, meaning change His mind.  He originally placed Adam and Eve in Paradise (Garden of Eden), then Noah’s ark landed at Mount Ararat, then Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob-Israel were given Mount Zion as part of the Promised Land – these are all the same places.
